It was actually emailed to me a while back and I just am not getting back to posting it. Thomas Bogard (Matt Bogard of Havelocks father) wrote it and sent it to me. After reading it I decided it was very postworthy and with his permission, it's posted under the Guest Blog section.
I will be posting some blogs off and on during the off-season, as well as posting info on what is in store for next season. My first blog will likely be posted next Tuesday and will look at the proposed weight class changes. At that time I will also post a new poll. I am disregarding the results of the current one for a few reasons. First it's been up way too long and secondly, the results seem questionable to me. Initially one answer was by far pulling away, then seemingly overnight another option caught and passed it.
Speaking of next season, I'm looking for a volunteer (a parent or coach) who is very knowledgeable of the NCISAA division. If you fit that bill, please

Academic Excellence Award Nate Reynolds, Green Hope There were several wrestlers who all had similar GPA and SAT scores, but with schools having different grading set-ups and course loads, I had to look beyond those numbers. What impressed me most about his resume was the number of teammates he tutored as well as his many other extracurricular activities.
Person of the Year Jerry Winteron, Cary The mans resume speaks for itself. North Carolina wrestling was made better by his presence in the Cary program.
Wrestlerette/Scorekeeper of the Year Kayla Johnson, Orange Many nominations were sent in but Kayla was nominated by several people, to include coaches from other programs. That really made her stick out in my mind.
Freshman of the Year Nick Kee, Scotland County Usually the talk associated with best Freshman seems to center around a Freshman that wins a state championship at 103, but when a Freshman is a force at what is normally Senior dominated weight classes of 135 & 140, so much that he places 3rd (the highest finish of any Freshman above 103), he sticks out.
Co-Inspirational Wrestlers of the Year Alex Sellers, Dudley & Ryan Lewis, Owen Both lost parents during the course of the season but stayed the course and finished strong. They showed so much heart in the process, that they both were truly an inspiration to many, including myself.

The Final Edition of the 2010 Retro Rankings and the 2001 through 2010 version of the Powerhouse Rankings have been posted.
I've given a lot of thoughts to year end awards. While wanting to do the traditional awards, I also wanted to do something different that would give some additional individuals some recognition. I also wanted to include wrestlers, parents, and fans in the voting so I have three categories of awards. One will be voted on by Coaches and Media. One will be voted on by coaches, media, wrestlers, parents, and fans. And one will be Editor's Choice.
Listed below are the eight categories to be voted on by coaches and members of the media: * 4A Wrestler of the Year * 3A Wrestler of the Year * 2A Wrestler of the Year * 1A Wrestler of the Year * NCISAA Wrestler of the Year * Pound for Pound Best Wrestler * Assistant Coach of the Year * Head Coach of the Year
Listed below are the six categories to be voted on by coaches, members of the media, wrestlers, parents, and fans: * Most Physical * Toughest on Top * Hardest to Takedown * Best Athlete * Best Pinner * Best Takedown Artist
The Editor's Choice awards won't simply be totally my control. I will make the final decision, but nominations for those awards are open to any one reading this. Simply email me the persons name and why you feel they deserve consideration.
Listed below are the two categories to be done as Editor's Choice: * Academic Excellence Award * Person of the Year * Wrestlerette/Scorekeeper of the Year
For the Academic Excellence Award, I will require that nominations include the coach of the individual nominated contact information so that I can verify the information in their nomination (GPA, SAT score, etc.).
Voting and nominations will be open until March 15th.
Votes and nominations can be sent to me via email at

Sorry about the delay between the voting ending and posting these results but there were quite a few votes cast at the last minute and with being in Michigan for the conclusion of my kids youth wrestling season, I just got the final votes tallied this morning.
There were two Editor's Choice awards that I did not open to nominations. These were Freshman of the Year and Inspirational Wrestler of the Year, which ended up being Co-Inspirational Wrestlers of the Year.
Without further ado, here they are.
As voted on by Coaches and Media... * Pound for Pound Best Wrestler- Tyrone Eatman, Riverside (44% of the votes) * 4A Wrestler of the Year- Marciano Ali, Parkland (43% of the votes) * 3A Wrestler of the Year- Daniel Ownbey, Enka (45% of the votes) * 2A Wrestler of the Year- Kenny Lindsay, First Flight (32% of the votes) * 1A Wrestler of the Year- Shelton Sales, Chatham Central (59% of the votes) * NCISAA Wrestler of the Year- Stout Watson, FCDS (43% of the votes) * Assistant Coach of the Year- Michael Turner, Parkland (24% of the votes) * Head Coach of the Year- Maurice Atwood, Parkland (67% of the votes)
As voted on by Coaches, Media, and Fans... * Most Physical- Daniel Ownbey, Enka (34% of the votes) * Toughest on Top- Marcus Cain, Parkland (39% of the votes) * Hardest to Takedown- Marciano Ali, Parkland (40% of the votes) * Best Athlete- Adonis Wright, Parkland (36% of the votes) * Best Pinner- Shane Brinn, Manteo (29% of the votes) * Best Takedown Artist- Jake McKay, West Forsyth (71% of the votes)
Editors Choice... * Academic Excellence Award- Nate Reynolds, Green Hope * Person of the Year- Jerry Winteron, Cary * Wrestlerette/Scorekeeper of the Year- Kayla Johnson, Orange * Freshman of the Year- Nick Kee, Scotland County * Co-Inspirational Wrestlers of the Year- Alex Sellers, Dudley & Ryan Lewis, Owen
The plan at the moment is to order plaques when I return to NC at the end of the month. I will then send them to the school for the head coach to hand out. Hopefully the coaches will have them by mid-April.

It's an exciting time of year... |

It is an exciting time of year for high school wrestlers still in the hunt for a bid to the state championship. In less than 36 hours the NCHSAA Regional Tournaments will be underway. 24 hours after that, 784 North Carolina High School student athletes will be in their final week of practice prior to heading to Greensboro, golden ticket clutched firmly in their hands. Exciting times indeed...
Excitement comes in different flavors for these student-athletes. For some it is the pending realization of a goal, the excitement that knowing all the sacrifice is about to rewarded, the excitement knowing that an undefeated record going into the show means nothing unless that record remains unblemished on 28 February 2010. For others it is the excitement of having qualified for the regional or state tournament for the first time; some are satisfied with that; while others, are excited because they know they will achieve more than anyone expects them to. That is a different kind of excitement; one that peeks out in an quirky smile or smirk; one that is held inside, contained, only to be released after upsetting the higher seed, the higher ranked wrestler and accomplishing what they alone knew would be accomplished. For seniors, there is an additional excitement, for the end of wrestling season is yet another mark of time, soon it will be June and June changes life forever for seniors.
There is other excitement too. Wrestlers' families live with their own flavors. It is a sibling watching their older or younger brother (or sister) with pride; believing in their hearts nobody can stop them but, publicly teasing as only siblings do. For parents the excitement often takes on a nervous quality. Some cannot wait to watch the matches, others dread them, knowing that they will be a mental wreck in the minutes preceding and during the match. Some parents know that they will not even be able to watch their child's match, the nervousness overcomes them and they have to wait in the hall until it is over. Excitement, indeed.
I am excited too, but, not just for my son and our high school team. I am excited for North Carolina. This year 784 wrestlers will get the opportunity to achieve something that few others receive. This opportunity is earned. Truth be told, some earn it more than others. But, each one earns it. Opportunity excites me because it brings with it challenges. The greatness of a challenge is not whether or not you beat the challenge but in how you take it on. This is the time of year when you cannot hide from the question, "Did I do everything I could to prepare and am I doing everything I can now?" 784 student athletes will get to face a challenge that, having faced it head on, will only make them better people. The lessons learned in the challenge can be painful and joyful. Some will find despair as they sit in the stands, face in their hands, inconsolable. Others will share their boundless joy with others. Painful and joyful lessons, true, but, lessons that prepare us to be strong in life.
I am excited for our North Carolina student athletes. Good luck to you all. Meet your challenges head on, prepared, and believe; believe in yourself, your coaches, your family, and your God. Have faith, move forward, take action, and take charge of your fate. Whether you finish as a State Champion, State Placer, or State Qualifier, know that it is the journey you take and how you meet the journey's challenges that make you who you are and who you will be, not the title at the end of the day. 784 wrestlers will begin the last stage of the journey and only 154 will finish their last match of the day with their hand raised. 154 wrestlers that finish as winners in the state tournament; 784 wrestlers that can be winners in life.
Good luck to you all. I am excited for North Carolina and I hope you are too. ~Coach B
